Got out for opening day yesterday for Arizona archery antelope with good friend Jimmy, his first antelope tag ever! He did lots of scouting and we even put a little film together of the bucks he would hunt. At first light we found ourselves looking over the flats at several antelope but as you all know they read the regs and had positioned themselves in horrible spots. With another herd spotted with a shooter buck and fifteen does we were off on the stalk. Opening day was HOT and I mean hot, jimmy's truck registered 102 as the high. Soon we found ourselves in our socks stalking 16 antelope on the side of a rolling ridge and soon we were 70 yards from the buck. With camera in hand and range finder I gave Jimmy the range and started filming, THWACK! The buck had a cedar on the side of him just behind the vitals and with his nerves testing him he hit the trunk! Couple laughs later and we were in pursuit again looking for the buck. Couple hours passed with no luck till we glassed were we had first stalked and there he was! Alone!!!!! This buck was bedded looking away with good wind and no does. So good friend Rocky took position on a high spot and watched the buck telling us his every move. One hour later we found ourselves 40 yards from this buck bedded and the wait began........ For 3 hours we baked in the sun taking turns relaxing our legs for we could only lay low for when he stood so he couldn't see us. We talked about everything from bows to kids trying to calm himself for the shot. With one puff of air hit me in the back of the head I said to Jimmy "Get ready !" The buck stood up and walked to 50 yards and I grunted, "50 yards" THWACK!!! The buck ran 100 yards and laid down. One more short stalk and one more arrow and Jimmy's antelope hunt was over! It was an awesome time and to share it with two great friends Jimmy and Rocky made it even more unforgettable! Thank you jimmy and rocky fir the awesome day!!!!
here is a short video of a bobcat we glassed up opening morning and I called him to 20 yards with my mouth. Also some footage of the buck Jimmy killed earlier before he missed him.
